Katie Shapiro Reception and Artist Talk

  • Kopeikin Gallery 2766 South La Cienega Boulevard Los Angeles, CA, 90034 United States (map)

We will gather for a wine and cheese reception at 4:30 followed by an an artist talk with Katie Shapiro at 5:00. Following the event, PAC members may wish to visit other gallery openings in the area.

Shapiro’s interest in sacred spaces and their draw led her to Banff, in Alberta Canada in 2015 for the project, The Great Divide. She is driven by the inquiry into the subjective nature of lived knowledge that can’t be seen, and that which lies internally and among one’s own senses. Situated among the Canadian Rockies, Banff lies on the continental divide and holds a strong energy. Even the first nations people, or aboriginals of Canada decided they would not settle in the area because of the energy’s power and strength. Shapiro utilizes photography and collage, and her work is grounded on the site visits. The photographs, collaged with color gels and white tape, serve as a filter to view the documented landscapes. Through her own interpretation they mimic the energetic dimension that is present in the locations alluding to that which can’t be seen: the ineffable and intangible matter of energy. The colored gel layers point toward limitations in our perception and propose what might exist beyond our immediate understanding of being present in a physical location.
