Join us for a visit to two La Brea Avenue galleries. First stop: a walkthrough with the artist at Couturier Gallery's exhibition of LA Noir: A City Reimagined, work by PAC-member Ken Locker. We will then move on to Fahey/Klein for a look at Steve Schapiro's exhibition Freedom Now: Civil Rights Photographs 1963-1968.

LA Noir: A City Reimagined is a study of contemporary Los Angeles conjured through the surrealistic and ominous lens of the “noir” movies and literature of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Los Angeles based photographer Ken Locker has had a diverse career in photography, documentary films, television and digital media. He began his formal pursuit of photography as a student of Minor White at MIT’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies in the late 70s. He continued his fine art work in New York, exhibiting in several group shows. Additionally, he worked in fashion, editorial and portrait photography. His work, as an independent photographer, appeared in many publications.

Freedom Now is an exhibition of American Civil Rights photographs by celebrated documentary photographer Steve Schapiro. The exhibition opens in conjunction with the highly-anticipated release of Taschen’s edition of The Fire Next Time. This limited-edition publication pairs Schapiro’s photographs with two seminal James Baldwin essays, “Down at the Cross – Letters from a Region of My Mind” which tackles the relationship between race and religion, and the groundbreaking, “My Dungeon Shook – Letter to My Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of Emancipation”.
