WATCH | I've Been Walking:
A Conversation with Janet Sternburg
Friday, October 22 at 3:00pm (PT)
A presentation and conversation with Janet Sternburg on the subject of her newly published monograph I’ve Been Walking: Janet Sternburg Los Angeles Photographs (Distanz Verlag). Presenting a selection of images from the monograph and ongoing projects, Janet discusses the development of the series, and the prominence of the practice of walking in her image-making and photographic perceptions of space and temporality.
I’ve Been Walking applies Sternburg’s attention to perception, memory, and layered experience to the unprecedented pandemic year in 2020. In keeping with her previous work, the photographs in this collection do not use digital or optical manipulation— a choice she describes not as a technological aversion but as a conscious practice. This has produced interpenetrating images that often are close to how the mind works. Bringing together abstraction and recognizable reality, the book is a visual poem of the everyday that shifts perceptions of space, perspective, and what is conventionally thought of as Los Angeles.
Janet Sternburg is a fine art photographer, a writer of literary books, a maker of theatre and films, and an educator. Characterized as the work of a visual poet, her photography has also been written about extensively in essays by art historians and philosophers, cultural critics, poets, and artists from other disciplines. A monograph of her photographs, Overspilling World: The Photographs of Janet Sternburg, was published in 2016-17 by Distanz Verlag with essays and commentary by Wim Wenders, Pepe Karmel and Catherine Opie. She has exhibited solo shows both nationally and internationally, including New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Milan, Munich, Mexico and Korea, where she received a commission for a full-building installation at Seoul Institute of the Arts; In 2018, the USC Fisher Museum of the Arts presented her solo show LIMBUS; In 2021 work from I’ve Been Walking was included in International Center of Photography’s "ICP Concerned" global exhibition. Sternburg pioneered in the use of disposable cameras to create images in which elements interpenetrate, a visual and imaginative world without borders.
