MEMBER EVENT | STEPHEN BERKMAN: PREDICTING THE PAST
Friday, April 30 at 11:00 AM (PST)

Virtual Open Conversation

It was in the early 2000s when celebrated photographer Stephen Berkman happened upon remnants of the archive of Shimmel Zohar, a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe who came to America in the 1850s. An accomplished silhouette artist, he became the proprietor of Zohar Studios, a storied photographic establishment on New York’s predominately Jewish Lower East Side. Fascinated by his find, and over the course of twenty years, Berkman has shined a light on this vanished whimsical world, all in a tribute to Zohar. Working with the glass plate process and photographing through period lenses still coated with dust of the nineteenth century, the world of Zohar Studios is brought back to life.

Predicting The Past, Zohar Studios: The Lost Years is a unique body of work, like traveling through a time machine, but you are never sure from where you are coming. We are thrilled to have the artist Stephen Berkman join us for a tour through this unusual archive, and also discuss the accompanying publication from Hat & Beard Press. Followed by an open discussion and Q+A.

Stephen Berkman was born in Syracuse, New York and raised in the Bay Area in CA. His works are featured in numerous private and publicly held collections around the country. He is currently on the film faculty of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
