From Documentary to Conceptual: Photographing Palmyra Across Time
Thursday, July 22 at 11AM PT
An exciting talk with Getty Research Institute Senior Curator Frances Terpak, who will speak about Palmyra, Syria, the legendary trading center famous for its ancient ruins, and how it has been captured through photographs. The GRI, here in Los Angeles, owns some of the most in depth archives depicting Palmyra. She will illustrate the work of Louis Vignes, a French naval captain who photographed the site for the first time in 1864, and the 21st century work by Ursula Schultz-Dornburg, a contemporary German photographer, who frames the monumental ruins within a historical perspective.
Due to the Syrian civil war and its recent occupation by ISIS, Palmyra has become a focus of the world's attention. Frances will discuss how the GRI utilizes its holdings to curate informative exhibitions intended for both the general public and the classroom.
