Continuing our Year of Innovation programming virtually, PAC LA presents a conversation with artist Fabiola Menchelli. This online lecture, hosted by curator Hannah Sloan, offers a look at the photographer’s recent work, including her current exhibition at Marshall Gallery here in Los Angeles.

Grounded in an ongoing investigation into light, material, and perception, Fabiola Menchelli approaches photography not only as a form of representation but as a mode of experience. Working directly with photosensitive materials and light as raw matter, the work opens the image as a space where the perceptual, the material, and the ideological converge. Engaging the limits of visibility, it shifts attention toward what remains unseen, proposing observation as an embodied and intuitive process. In doing so, the work explores forms of attention that move beyond the rational, inviting ways of relating to the world grounded in curiosity, uncertainty, and a desire to situate oneself within something larger.

Fabiola Menchelli (b. 1983, Mexico City) is an artist working at the intersection of light, material, and perception. Her recent exhibitions include our sharp line of sight at Marshall Gallery, LA (2026) and certain silence at the Norton Museum of Art (2025). She has been a visiting artist in both Mexico and U.S. institutions, and currently is core faculty at the Seminario de Producción Fotográfica in Centro de la Imagen Mexico City.
