PAC•LA Trip to Stanford University & San Francisco

  • Stanford University & San Francisco (map)

Please join us for a special two-day art excursion to the Stanford University Special Collections and the city of San Francisco for some very special and rare looks at historically significant photo archives, along with exciting contemporary photo-based exhibitions.

We will start our trip meeting at 10:00am at Oakland International Airport for a short bus ride to Stanford University.

At Stanford Libraries Special Collections we will have a print viewing related to the Stanford Libraries Photography Initiative, a program designed to collect and preserve photographers’ archives and photographic collections. Among the works we’ll view are selections from the Arthur Tress and Mark Ruwedel archives. Included are early, unique exhibition prints from Tress' work for V.I.S.T.A and from his “Appalachia--People and Places” series as well as Ruwedel's mounted photo studies and limited edition handmade photo books. Additional portfolios, limited edition books, and prints by Michael Bishop, Barbara Bosworth, Linda Connor, Bob Fitch, György Kepes, Herbert Matter, Milton Rogovin, Aaron Siskind, and others will also be available for viewing. Highlights of the 19th century work present will include Leland Stanford's copy of Muybridge's Attitudes of Animals in Motion from 1881 and a selection of 157 Carleton Watkins' mammoth albumen plates, including views of the Yosemite Valley. After lunch we will visit The Cantor Center for Visual Arts to view photography by John Gutmann, Helen Levitt, and Wright Morris.

Back in SF we will enjoy a group dinner at Fang, featuring a banquet of seasonal Chinese cuisine.

Day Two will begin at Fraenkel Gallery for a presentation of work by artist Sophie Calle. Also at 49 Geary we will visit with collector David Mahoney and view his private photography collection. At SFMOMA we will visit the private photo study room where curators will share with us some of their latest acquisitions. Following lunch there we will visit the unusual JR installation, and spend some time at the Dawoud Bey and Elad Lassry shows. We will conclude the day at the marvelous photo venue Pier 24, and view their very special 10th anniversary show. During the day in San Francisco, we will be walking between all venues.

Cost for the trip is $425 which includes bus to Stanford and back to SF, two lunches and one dinner, and museum admission fees. Cost does not include airfare, lodging, breakfast, transfers, or transportation between venues. We have suggestions for Thursday morning flights from LA as well as hotel recommendations for those who register.

Attendance is limited to 20. Full payment is due by Friday, February 7. No refunds after Monday, February 10.

We look forward to an exciting couple of days in the Bay Area and we hope you will join us!
