A presentation by photo historian Sally Stein and archival printer Stephen Callis on the portfolio "The 17 Vivian Maier Photographs Collected by Allan Sekula". Discussing the genesis of the project, the making of the portfolio and its impact on the Allan Sekula Social Documentary Fund.
In 2009, Sekula began purchasing online negatives of street scenes photographed by Vivian Maier. In 2017 Stephen Callis printed the seventeen negatives, and with Stein, produced the limited edition Vivian Maier portfolio.
In 2014, Sally Stein established the Allan Sekula Social Documentary Fund at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) as a memorial to her late husband Allan Sekula (1951-2013), longtime Photo & Media faculty at CalArts. The fund has supported 31 students at a critical passage between their time as students and their emergence as professional media artists.
Sally Stein is Professor Emerita at UC Irvine and continues to publish in the field of photographic history.
Stephen Callis, an MFA graduate of CalArts, prints and exhibits his photographs while teaching and directing the photo program at Moorpark College, CA.
