Cuban Perspectives on Photography: A Panel Discussion with Virginia Heckert

  • The Getty Center 1200 Getty Center Drive Los Angeles, CA, 90049 United States (map)

Traveling to Havana twice last year, Getty Curator of Photographs Virginia Heckert met with Cuban photographers to review their portfolios. Together with a small contingent of U.S. photo experts, Virginia selected four photographers to participate in this year’s International Meeting Place portfolio reviews sponsored by Houston Fotofest. Following Fotofest, through the support of Photographic Arts Council Los Angeles and The Foundation for a Civil Society, these four photographers will visit Los Angeles for a program at the Getty Center on Sunday, March 15th at 2 pm.

What are the challenges – and rewards – of living and working as an artist in Cuba today? After periods of revolution and economic crisis, photography continues to thrive as a medium of communication and expression. Part of a younger generation using photography to address current concerns, Adrián Fernández, Alejandro González, Irolán Maroselli, and Alfredo Sarabia Fajardo will present their work, followed by a conversation with Virginia.
